SCRAM in Deal with Large Screen Displays

Santa Ana, CA - The week before InfoComm, Large Screen Displays (Santa Ana, CA) (www.largescreendisplays.com) inked an exclusive contract with SCRAM Technologies, Inc. (Dunkirk, MD) to become its North American distributor in the commercial AV market. At InfoComm, Large Screen Displays showed some impressive screen technologies. The first product was a screen from SCRAM that exhibited particularly high ambient light rejection capabilities. This particular screen model had been in test for the past two years and had never been shown before.

The SCRAMscreen employs luva technology, where many layers of acrylic are formed sandwich-like. After cutting off a quarter-inch thick piece for a particular size screen, a proprietary surface is put down to hold it together. Large Screen Displays does the bonding and framing of the SCRAMscreen.

The company claims the screen can be taken outside, and, with a 2000-lumen projector, images can be readily viewed in broad daylight. At the show, a bright light was shown on the screen and could not be seen from the projected side. The on-screen images did appear very crisp with good contrast, despite the bright light shining on the surface. The way the SCRAMscreen works is that when the light is incident to the screen's surface, not from the direction of the projected image, the luva technology stops sunlight from going through the screen where the image is formed. The light just bounces around between the layers of acrylic, but doesn't penetrate through it.

This luva technology product is very new and has been released to only a handful of dealers. The company is currently setting up a special program to launch the product. It has been installed in just a few locations, including the Jacksonville, Florida stadium, a high-impact area. Large Screen Displays is confident that this screen will readily compete with LED-based screens because of its cost competitiveness. The screen is sold in 52-inch diagonal sheets at $1,900. Seaming several of them together with a proprietary bonding process can make larger screens; the current maximum size is 9 x 16 feet. There is an additional charge for laminating screens together. As an example, a 130-inch diagonal screen, which takes six-sheets, sells for $20K.

The other major product released at the show was the blend screen, with a custom-fabricated standalone enclosure. A blend screen is made up of multiple screens blended with a diffusion screen. At the show, the company demonstrated a 48-inch high by 107-inch wide blend screen. The freestanding enclosure offers a six-axis fine-tuning projector cradle and eight-point fine-tuning adjustable mirror system. Two images were edge-blended at the center using Folsom/Barco blending electronics. Two Barco R12 12K-lumen DLP projectors were used to make a single image, which looked quite good.

The screen shown was 1/4-inch thick and exhibited some bowing, whereas future blend screens will be 3/8-inch thick to prevent any noticeable bending. The company has also recently added an anti-reflective coating to the back of the screen to minimize reflections. Retail pricing for the blend screen is $50 per square foot.
